XC958-EV Battery-Electric Wheel loader for Heavy-Duty Construction and Material Handling

When I talk with customers about electric wheel loaders, I usually get the same question first: can an electric machine really handle heavy loading work? My answer is that it depends on the machine, the jobsite and the way the machine is configured. The XC958-EV Battery-Electric Wheel Loader is specifically designed for heavy-duty loading rather than light warehouse work. It combines a large wheel loader platform with battery-electric drive, high torque motors, fast charging and an intelligent control system.

At Ganglong Heavy Industry Technology (Hefei) Co., Ltd., we work with construction machinery, mining machinery, agricultural machinery and related attachments. We also serve international customers through Hefei Ganglong International Trade Co., Ltd. Because our customers work in different countries and industries, I do not look at an electric wheel loader only from the point of view of battery capacity. I look at the complete working cycle: loading, travelling, dumping, charging, maintenance and transport.

The XC958-EV is a good example of why that complete view matters. XCMG describes it as a third-generation Pure Electric Wheel Loader using a three-motor system, with no conventional transmission. The published official specification lists a 5,800 kg rated load and 280 kW rated power, with an operating weight of 18,500 ± 300 kg. Another current XCMG electric-loader specification source lists the XC958-EV at 270 kW and around 18,700 kg, showing that configuration and market differences need to be confirmed before an international order.

For me, that is an important point. I would rather confirm the exact machine configuration with a buyer than promise that every XC958-EV has exactly the same specification. Battery capacity, power system, bucket, working equipment, charging arrangement and local requirements can all affect the final machine.

1. What Is the XC958-EV Battery-Electric Wheel Loader?

The XC958-EV Battery-Electric Wheel Loader is a heavy-duty electric wheel loader designed to replace many traditional diesel loading operations with battery-powered drive. Instead of using a diesel engine as the main power source, the machine uses electric motors and a battery system to provide power for travelling and working functions.

The basic job is still familiar. The operator drives toward a material pile, enters the bucket into the material, lifts the working equipment, reverses or turns away, travels to the unloading point and dumps the load. The difference is what happens underneath the machine while those movements are taking place.

XCMG states that the XC958-EV uses a three-motor technical solution. The travel system and hydraulic system are separately driven by electric motors, while the machine uses integrated control of motor power, speed and torque. XCMG also describes energy recovery, intelligent thermal management and three-level fault safety protection as part of the machine design.

In plain English, the machine has several electric motors doing jobs that would normally depend on a diesel engine and mechanical transmission system. The control system decides how much power is needed and sends that power to the relevant system.

This arrangement is especially interesting for operations where the machine works in areas with strict requirements for noise, exhaust emissions or indoor air quality. XCMG lists steel plants, power plants, coking plants, coal chemical facilities, coal yards, aggregate yards and tunnels among the XC958-EV application conditions.

That does not mean the electric loader is automatically suitable for every site. Charging infrastructure, electricity supply, working hours, ambient temperature and material type all need to be checked. For a customer working two shifts in a quarry, for example, I would look at charging time and battery configuration just as carefully as I would look at bucket size.

2. How the Electric Drive System Works

I think the easiest way to understand the XC958-EV is to forget complicated electrical terms for a moment. Think of the battery as the energy storage unit, the electric motors as the power units and the control system as the brain that decides how the power should be used.

When the operator presses the accelerator, the control system reads the command and adjusts motor output. The motor can respond quickly because electric drive does not need the same sequence of combustion, clutch operation and conventional gear changes found in a traditional diesel powertrain.

XCMG describes the XC958-EV as using an industry-first three-motor arrangement with no gearbox. Its published information says the machine uses intelligent power matching to coordinate motor power, speed and torque. The travel system uses a series dual-motor drive arrangement, while the hydraulic system has independent electric drive.

For an operator, the important thing is not the engineering diagram. What matters is the response of the machine when the bucket enters a material pile or when the loader needs to move away with a full load.

The electric system also supports energy recovery. During certain braking or deceleration conditions, the control system can send electrical energy back toward the battery instead of wasting all of it as heat. XCMG specifically describes this energy recovery function as part of the XC958-EV energy-saving design.

No Conventional Gearbox

One of the biggest differences between the XC958-EV and a traditional diesel wheel loader is the absence of a conventional transmission in the published electric configuration.

This does not mean the machine has no mechanical components. It still has axles, wheels, working equipment, hydraulic cylinders, bearings and many other moving parts. But removing the conventional gearbox from the drive system changes the way power is transferred and also changes the maintenance points that technicians need to pay attention to.

XCMG says its pure-electric loader design can reduce maintenance requirements associated with diesel-engine filters and conventional transmission maintenance.

For fleet operators, fewer routine engine-related service items can be useful. However, I always make one thing clear to customers: an electric loader is not maintenance-free. Battery systems, cooling systems, electrical connections, hydraulic oil, tires, brakes, lubrication points and working equipment still require proper inspection.

Electric Motor Response

An electric motor can provide torque quickly. This characteristic is useful in loader work because the machine often moves from a stationary or slow position into a high-load condition in a short period.

When the bucket enters a pile, the machine needs controlled force rather than simply maximum power. The control system has to balance torque, wheel traction and battery output. XCMG describes multiple torque and current protection functions on the XC958-EV to help the motor system work under demanding conditions.

This is one reason I prefer to describe the XC958-EV as an electric heavy-duty wheel loader rather than simply calling it a “green loader.” The interesting part is not only the absence of diesel fuel. The machine also needs to deliver useful working power.

3. Battery, Charging and Working Time

When customers consider an electric wheel loader, the battery is usually the first thing they ask about. That makes sense. An electric loader cannot be judged properly without understanding how it will be charged during the working day.

The XC958-EV is designed with two charging interfaces on the side of the machine. XCMG states that the machine supports dual-gun DC fast charging and that either one of the two charging ports can also be used independently for single-gun charging. XCMG recommends charging equipment in the 240 kW to 360 kW range for the published configuration.

XCMG states that the average charging time of around one hour can support approximately 6–10 hours of continuous operation, depending on working conditions. I always stress the final part of that sentence: depending on working conditions. A loader pushing into dense rock all day will not necessarily have the same energy consumption as one moving lighter material around a flat yard.

Charging Plan Matters

If I am helping a customer plan an XC958-EV purchase, I want to know the working schedule before talking about battery range.

For example, suppose the loader works an eight-hour shift. If the machine can complete its working cycle within the available battery range and recharge during a planned break or shift change, the charging system can fit naturally into the operation.

On a continuous multi-shift site, the charging strategy becomes more important. The customer may need more than one machine, a larger charging setup or a planned charging window. The best answer depends on the actual production schedule.

This is why I do not recommend using a simple “hours per charge” number as the only basis for purchase. Working load, travel distance, temperature, operator behavior, material density, cycle time and attachment all affect energy use.

Battery Safety and Thermal Management

Battery systems need careful temperature control, especially on heavy equipment. XCMG states that key systems use intelligent thermal management and that the XC958-EV has a three-level fault safety protection design. The machine can display operating and fault information, and XCMG describes remote fault diagnosis through its cloud service.

In everyday language, the machine continuously watches important electrical conditions instead of leaving the operator to guess whether something is wrong.

For overseas customers, I also confirm the charging standard, electrical infrastructure and local service capability before delivery. A good electric machine still needs a practical charging environment.

4. Main Features That Matter on the Jobsite

Strong Loading Capacity

The published XC958-EV specification gives the machine a 5,800 kg rated load. That puts it in a heavy-duty wheel-loader class suitable for substantial material-handling tasks. XCMG's official page lists steel plants, power plants, coal yards and aggregate yards among its application conditions.

For me, the rated load is only one part of the picture. Bucket size, material density and loading height must work together. A bucket that is too large for a dense material may not be the best choice even if it looks attractive on a quotation sheet.

High-Demand Electric Power

The official XCMG page currently lists 280 kW rated power for the XC958-EV. Another published XC958-EV specification lists 270 kW, so I recommend confirming the exact configuration before placing an order.

Either way, the important point is that this is not a small electric loader designed only for light-duty warehouse work. It is a large battery-electric wheel loader intended for serious material handling.

Heavy-Duty Frame

Electric power does not remove the physical loads created during digging and loading. The frame still needs to handle the machine's own weight, the bucket load and repeated forces from the working equipment.

XCMG describes the XC958-EV as using a large articulation opening and heavy-duty structural components. The frame structure is developed using CAE analysis and robot welding techniques, with the aim of reducing stress concentration and supporting heavy-load operation.

That is especially relevant for quarrying, aggregate handling and industrial yards where loading cycles can be repetitive.

High-Strength Bucket

XCMG states that the XC958-EV bucket uses high-strength steel plates and that the wear and impact resistance of the bucket has been improved by more than 30% compared with its previous design reference.

I would still select the bucket according to the material. Sand, gravel, coal, rock and industrial waste have different characteristics. The right bucket can have a bigger effect on daily productivity than simply choosing the largest available bucket.

Quiet and Enclosed Cab

One noticeable difference with battery-electric equipment is the operating environment. There is no diesel engine idling beside the operator, and there is no diesel exhaust coming directly from a tailpipe during operation.

XCMG describes the XC958-EV as having a fully enclosed, slightly pressurized cab with heating and air conditioning. The panoramic cab is designed to provide broad visibility and a quieter working environment.

This can be particularly useful for indoor or semi-enclosed industrial areas, where exhaust fumes and engine noise can be more noticeable.

5. XC958-EV Applications and Working Conditions

The best way to understand this electric wheel loader is to look at where it can actually work. XCMG specifically lists steel plants, power plants, coking plants, coal chemical facilities, coal yards and aggregate yards. The machine is also described for tunnel and other demanding working conditions in related XC958-EV configurations.

Steel Plants

Steel plants can involve high temperatures, dust, heavy materials and frequent transport. A battery-electric loader can be attractive in areas where reducing direct exhaust emissions is important.

However, the exact operating environment matters. If the loader works close to high-temperature materials, we need to understand the temperature exposure, material type and required protection before selecting the final configuration.

Coal Yards

Coal yards are another natural application for a heavy-duty electric loader. Loading, stockpile management and truck loading are repetitive tasks, and dust can be a major concern.

The XC958-EV's electric drive means there is no diesel engine exhaust during operation. XCMG also provides intelligent monitoring and thermal-management features designed around the electric power system.

Aggregate and Sand Yards

Aggregate yards are often busy places. The loader may repeatedly move between a stockpile and a truck or hopper. In this kind of operation, cycle time, bucket filling, travel distance and charging schedule all matter.

If the charging infrastructure is available, the XC958-EV can be considered for this type of repetitive loading work. I would calculate the daily energy requirement before confirming the machine configuration.

Power and Industrial Plants

Industrial facilities may have strict requirements around emissions and noise. This is one area where battery-electric equipment can make practical sense, especially where the machine works close to buildings or workers.

Still, electricity is not automatically cheaper in every country. Before purchasing, I recommend comparing the local electricity price, diesel price, operating hours and charging infrastructure. A serious machinery purchase should be based on actual local operating numbers rather than a generic claim about energy savings.

Tunnel and Enclosed Work

Tunnel work presents a different challenge because ventilation is limited. XCMG's electric loader family includes models designed for tunnel conditions, and related XC958-EV configurations are promoted for demanding enclosed applications.

For any tunnel project, I would confirm dimensions, working clearance, ventilation requirements, charging location and safety requirements before ordering.

6. XC958-EV Compared with Other Electric and Diesel Wheel Loaders

When customers ask me to compare loaders, I prefer to put the basic numbers side by side first. The figures below come from XCMG's published product information. They should be treated as model references rather than a universal purchasing recommendation because specifications can change with configuration and market.

This comparison shows the basic position of the XC958-EV. It sits between smaller and larger electric loaders in XCMG's published product range. The XC938-EV is a 3.5-ton rated-load machine, while the XC968-EV reaches a 6-ton rated load in the published configuration.

For customers who are deciding between an electric and conventional diesel machine, I also like to compare the operating concept rather than simply comparing horsepower.

Source: XC958-EV characteristics are based on XCMG's official product information. The diesel-loader column describes the general operating structure of conventional diesel wheel loaders rather than one specific model.

There is no need to pretend that the two power systems work in exactly the same way. They do not. With an electric loader, the customer needs to think about charging infrastructure and battery management. With a diesel loader, the customer needs to think about fuel supply, engine service and emissions. The right comparison depends on the actual jobsite.

7. Manufacturing, Inspection and Export Process at Ganglong

When an international customer buys a wheel loader from us, the machine is only one part of the transaction. The rest of the process includes configuration confirmation, documentation, inspection, packing and transportation.

Step 1: Confirm the Working Condition

I first want to know what the machine will do. Is it loading gravel? Moving coal? Handling material inside a steel plant? Working in a tunnel? Loading trucks in a yard?

I also ask about working hours, average travel distance, material density, loading height, climate and charging conditions. These details help us understand whether the XC958-EV is suitable and which configuration should be discussed.

Step 2: Confirm the Electric Configuration

For an electric wheel loader, this step is more detailed than with a normal diesel machine. We need to check battery configuration, charging method, available electrical capacity, charging equipment and expected daily working schedule.

XCMG's official XC958-EV page recommends a 240–360 kW charging station for its published configuration and supports dual DC fast charging.

If a customer cannot install suitable charging equipment at the jobsite, we need to know that before the machine is shipped. There is no point sending a battery-electric loader to a site that has no practical way to charge it.

Step 3: Production and Preparation

For our normal orders, the typical production cycle is around 15–30 days after order confirmation, depending on the machine configuration and quantity. Special attachments, battery requirements and customized orders may affect the actual schedule.

During this stage, we coordinate the machine specification, documentation and export requirements so the customer knows what is being prepared.

Step 4: Pre-Delivery Inspection

Before delivery, we inspect the machine as a complete working unit. For an electric wheel loader, I pay particular attention to the battery system, electric drive system, charging interface, control display, hydraulic system, steering, brakes, tires and working equipment.

We also check general operating performance, visible leakage, electrical connections and machine functions. The exact inspection list can be expanded according to the customer's requirements.

Step 5: Export Packing and Transportation

For overseas shipment, the loader is cleaned and prepared for transport. Exposed areas are protected against moisture and rust where required, and the machine is securely fixed according to the selected shipping method.

Depending on the machine dimensions and destination, transportation can be arranged through bulk vessel, Ro-Ro vessel, container or flat-rack container. Spare parts are normally packed separately in wooden cases or strong export cartons.

Payment for international orders is commonly arranged through T/T, such as 30% deposit with the balance before shipment. L/C may be available for qualified international orders, subject to the specific transaction.

8. Why I Recommend Looking at the Whole Electric Loader Package

When customers compare electric wheel loaders online, they often focus on the battery and rated power. I understand why. Those numbers are easy to compare.

But after years of dealing with construction machinery, I think the less exciting details deserve just as much attention.

Can the local grid support the charger? How far does the loader travel during one cycle? What is the material density? How many hours does it work each day? Is there a backup machine? Is the site hot, cold, dusty or enclosed? Where will technicians service the machine? What spare parts need to be kept locally?

These questions determine whether an electric loader works smoothly in the real world.

For example, XCMG states that the XC958-EV can meet environmental conditions from -40°C to 50°C on its published product information. That is a wide temperature range, but actual battery performance and charging requirements still need to be considered under the specific local climate.

Likewise, XCMG states that the machine can provide approximately 6–10 hours of continuous operation after an average one-hour charge depending on working conditions. I would never use that figure as a guaranteed operating time for every customer. Heavy loading, long travel distances and extreme temperatures can change energy consumption.

That is why our approach at Ganglong is based on the customer's actual application. We do not just ask, “Which model do you want?” We ask, “What work are you trying to finish?”

The most useful information is your country, application, material type, approximate material density, daily working hours, required bucket, loading height, number of machines and available charging capacity. If you have photos or videos of the jobsite, those are also helpful because they give us a much clearer picture of the actual working conditions.

10. Final Thoughts on the XC958-EV Battery-Electric Wheel Loader

The XC958-EV Battery-Electric Wheel Loader is not simply a diesel loader with an electric battery added to it. Its operating concept is different. The published machine uses electric motors for travel and hydraulic functions, removes the conventional gearbox from the three-motor configuration and uses electronic control to manage power, torque and energy recovery.

Its published 5,800 kg rated load, 270–280 kW class electric power, heavy-duty structure, dual DC charging and approximately 6–10 hour working range under stated conditions put it into the serious material-handling category rather than the light electric-equipment category.

At the same time, I would not tell a customer that an electric loader is automatically the right choice simply because it is electric. The jobsite has to support it. Electricity price, charging infrastructure, working hours, material type, climate and maintenance capability all matter.

For a steel plant, coal yard, aggregate yard, industrial material-handling operation or another site where direct diesel exhaust and noise are concerns, the XC958-EV can be an interesting machine to evaluate. For customers running long shifts, the charging plan should be designed at the same time as the machine purchase.

At Ganglong Heavy Industry Technology (Hefei) Co., Ltd., we can help customers look at that complete picture. Our business covers construction machinery, mining machinery, agricultural machinery and matching attachments, while our international trade team has experience serving customers across Asia, Africa, America and other regions.

If you are considering an XC958-EV Battery-Electric Wheel Loader, send us your working material, daily operating hours, destination country, required bucket, loading height and charging conditions. We can then check the available XC958-EV configuration, production schedule, inspection requirements, shipping method and supporting equipment based on the actual project.

For heavy-duty electric machinery, that practical information is far more useful than simply asking whether a machine is “powerful.” The real question is whether the complete machine, charging system and working plan fit together. That is the point I would start with before making an international equipment purchase.
