SWE400E-3H Large Excavator for Construction, Mining and Heavy Earthmoving
When I talk with customers about a large Excavator, I usually start with one simple question: what kind of work will the machine actually do?
It sounds basic, but it is important. An excavator can look impressive in a product photo, yet that does not automatically mean it is the right machine for every job. Digging depth, material type, working space, bucket size, transportation conditions and daily workload all affect the final choice.
For customers looking for a machine in the 40-ton class, the SWE400E-3H Large Excavator is a model worth looking at closely. The published configuration has a working weight of 39,200 kg and a standard bucket capacity of 2.0 m³. It uses a Cummins QSL9 engine rated at 214 kW at 2,100 rpm. The machine also offers a maximum digging reach of 10,715 mm and a maximum digging depth of 6,855 mm.
At Ganglong Heavy Industry Technology (Hefei) Co., Ltd., we work with customers who need construction machinery, mining machinery, agricultural machinery and matching attachments. Founded in 2013, our business combines equipment-related services, machinery supply, customization support and international trade.
Through Hefei Ganglong International Trade Co., Ltd., we serve customers across Asia, Africa, America and other markets. When customers ask us about a SWE400E-3H Excavator, our role is to help with product selection, configuration communication, inspection, documents, packing and international transportation. We do not present ourselves as the original manufacturer of Sunward equipment. We act as a machinery supplier and international trade partner.
That distinction matters to us. A good product page should not only explain what a machine can do. It should also tell the buyer who is supplying it and how the order is handled.
The SWE400E-3H sits in the large excavator category and is aimed at demanding excavation and earthmoving work. With a published working weight of 39.2 tons and a 2.0 m³ standard bucket, it offers considerably more working capacity than typical small and medium Excavators.
In practical terms, I see this type of machine fitting jobs where the customer needs substantial digging power without moving all the way into the much heavier 50-ton, 70-ton or 90-ton excavator classes.
Typical applications can include large construction projects, road work, quarry-related excavation, mining support, industrial site preparation, foundation work and general heavy earthmoving. The final application should always be checked against the actual ground conditions and machine configuration.
The official technical sheet lists a bucket digging force of 253 kN, arm digging force of 217 kN and maximum traction of 348 kN. The published maximum climbing angle is 70%, while ground pressure is listed at 68.8 kPa. These numbers give us a useful picture of the machine's working capability, although actual production depends on the operator, material, attachment and site conditions.

One thing I like about looking at these numbers together is that they tell a more complete story. The machine is not simply about engine power. Its digging force, travel ability, swing speed, bucket size and operating weight all work together.
That is how I recommend customers look at an excavator. Do not choose it from one number alone.
The working principle of the SWE400E-3H Excavator is straightforward. The diesel engine provides the main power. Hydraulic pumps use that power to move hydraulic oil through the machine. Hydraulic cylinders then move the boom, arm and bucket, while hydraulic motors control travel and upper-body rotation.
If you have never operated an excavator, you can think of it as a very strong mechanical arm mounted on a tracked platform.
The boom gives the machine height and reach. The arm extends the working distance. The bucket actually cuts into the soil or picks up the material. At the same time, the crawler undercarriage keeps the machine stable and allows it to move around the site.
According to the published specification, the SWE400E-3H uses a 6,500 mm boom and a 2,670 mm arm. The maximum digging height is 10,230 mm, while the maximum dumping height is 7,180 mm. Maximum digging depth is 6,855 mm and maximum digging reach is 10,715 mm.
These dimensions are important when we talk about actual jobs. Imagine an excavator loading soil into a dump truck. The operator needs enough height to clear the truck body and enough reach to place the material properly. If the machine is digging a foundation, the working depth becomes more important. If it is working along a road or quarry face, reach and swing space may matter more.
| Working Range | Published Value |
|---|---|
| Boom Length | 6,500 mm |
| Arm Length | 2,670 mm |
| Maximum Digging Height | 10,230 mm |
| Maximum Loading Height | 7,180 mm |

Of course, a specification sheet does not replace a site survey. Real digging performance changes with soil hardness, rock conditions, bucket type, operator technique, machine position and weather. That is why we prefer to understand the customer's project before confirming a machine.
The 6.5 m boom and 2.67 m arm give the SWE400E-3H Large Excavator a useful working range for large-scale excavation.
When an excavator works all day, the boom and arm are exposed to repeated loading. Every digging cycle creates force through the bucket, arm and boom. This is why the structure of the working equipment matters just as much as engine output.
For customers working in construction, quarrying or large earthmoving projects, I normally recommend checking the expected material and bucket configuration before deciding whether the standard setup is enough.
The published standard bucket capacity is 2.0 m³. This gives the machine a useful material-handling capacity while keeping it in a more manageable size range than heavier large excavators.
Bucket capacity should always be matched with the material. Loose soil, clay, sand, gravel and rock do not place exactly the same demands on a bucket. A customer working in soft ground may need a different bucket arrangement from someone working in a quarry.
That is one of the details we discuss before confirming an order.
The published bucket digging force is 253 kN and arm digging force is 217 kN. For me, these numbers are useful because they show that the machine is intended for serious excavation rather than light-duty landscaping.
In hard ground, the excavator needs to push the bucket into the material, curl the bucket and lift the load while maintaining machine stability. A strong hydraulic system and suitable working equipment are both important in that process.
The crawler undercarriage is another part that should not be ignored.
The SWE400E-3H has a published ground pressure of 68.8 kPa and a shoe width of 600 mm. The track length on the ground is listed at 4,245 mm. A crawler excavator uses its tracks to spread the machine's weight across the ground and provide traction while working.
For uneven construction sites, earthmoving areas and quarry environments, stability is especially important. The operator needs to feel that the machine is sitting securely while digging, swinging and loading material.
The published maximum travel speed is 6.2 km/h, with a lower speed of 3.6 km/h. Swing speed is listed at 10.2 rpm.
These values are not there to make the machine a fast-moving vehicle. Excavators are working machines first. What matters is how quickly the machine can reposition when needed and how smoothly it can move through a repeated digging and loading cycle.
The engine listed for the SWE400E-3H is the Cummins QSL9, with 8.9 liters of displacement and published power of 214 kW at 2,100 rpm.
When customers hear “214 kW,” they sometimes focus only on the number. I prefer to look at how the engine works with the rest of the machine.
An excavator engine has to provide enough power for hydraulic work, travel, swing and auxiliary functions. The hydraulic system then turns that power into useful movement. If the engine and hydraulic system are well matched to the machine size, the operator can work through repeated cycles without the machine feeling unnecessarily strained.
The published specification also gives the machine a 650-liter fuel tank and a 320-liter hydraulic oil tank. These capacities are useful when planning daily operation and maintenance.
| System | Published SWE400E-3H Data |
|---|---|
| Engine Brand | Cummins |
| Engine Model | QSL9 |
| Power | 214 kW / 2,100 rpm |
| Maximum Torque | 1,505 N·m / 1,400 rpm |
| Displacement | 8.9 L |
| Fuel Tank | 650 L |
| Hydraulic Oil Tank | 320 L |
| Maximum Traction | 348 kN |
| Ground Pressure | 68.8 kPa |

For daily operation, I also pay attention to basic maintenance access. Large machinery is not something you buy and forget about. Engine oil, hydraulic oil, filters, cooling components, tracks and working equipment all need regular inspection.
A machine that is easy to check and maintain can save unnecessary downtime. That is especially important for customers running long shifts or working far away from major service centers.
The SWE400E-3H Large Excavator can be used across several industries. The key is matching the machine to the job instead of trying to make one excavator do everything.
Large construction projects often require substantial earth removal. Foundations, underground structures, industrial buildings and large site preparation projects can all involve deep excavation and high material volumes.
With a maximum published digging depth of 6,855 mm and a maximum digging reach of 10,715 mm, the SWE400E-3H offers a working range suited to many heavy construction applications.
Road projects can involve cutting, excavation, drainage work, slope preparation and moving large amounts of soil. A crawler excavator can work across changing ground conditions and reposition as the road alignment changes.
For road contractors, I would also check the machine's transport dimensions and local road restrictions before ordering. A machine that works well on the jobsite still needs to reach that jobsite legally and economically.
Mining and quarry work can be much harder on machinery than ordinary soil excavation. The material may be hard, abrasive or mixed with rock.
The SWE400E-3H can be considered for excavation and material handling in these environments, provided that the machine configuration matches the actual material and working conditions.
Factories, warehouses, energy projects and other industrial developments often require large-scale ground preparation before construction begins.
The excavator can support earth removal, trenching, foundation preparation and general site work. The exact attachment can be selected according to the job.
Sometimes the job is simply moving a lot of material.
That might mean clearing a large site, preparing a construction platform, creating drainage channels or loading soil and aggregate. In these cases, the combination of a 39.2-ton operating weight and 2.0 m³ bucket gives the SWE400E-3H a useful balance between machine size and working capacity.
| Application | Typical Work | Key Machine Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Foundation excavation, site preparation | Digging depth and working reach |
| Road Work | Earthmoving, drainage, slope work | Ground stability and transport requirements |
| Mining | Excavation and material handling | Material hardness and attachment selection |
| Quarrying | Rock excavation and loading | Bucket and working equipment configuration |
| Industrial Projects | Large-scale site preparation | Working range and daily operating hours |
| Earthmoving | Bulk soil excavation and loading | Bucket capacity and cycle efficiency |
Source basis: published SWE400E-3H specifications and Sunward large-excavator application positioning. Actual application suitability depends on site conditions and configuration.

Customers often ask me how the SWE400E-3H compares with larger excavators. I think comparison is useful as long as we compare the right things.
A heavier excavator normally brings more capacity, but it can also bring higher transport requirements and different site demands. A smaller machine may be easier to transport, but it may not provide enough bucket capacity or digging force for a large project.
The following table uses published Sunward specifications to show the position of several models in the large excavator range.
| Model | Published Weight | Engine Power | Bucket Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| SWE400E-3H | 39,200 kg | 214 kW / 2,100 rpm | 2.0 m³ |
| SWE500E-3H | 49,000 kg | 280 kW / 2,000 rpm | 2.6 m³ |
| SWE600F | 52,800 kg | 300 kW / 1,800 rpm | 3.2 m³ |
| SWE700F | 66,700 kg | 563 kW / 2,100 rpm | Configuration dependent |
| SWE750F | 79,000 kg | 565 kW / 1,900 rpm | 5.0 m³ |
| SWE950E-3H | 93,800 kg | 565 kW / 1,900 rpm | 5.5 m³ |

The table shows that the SWE400E-3H Excavator sits toward the lighter end of this group. That can be useful when a customer needs a serious large excavator but does not need the capacity of a 50-ton-plus or 90-ton machine.
I would never tell a customer to buy the biggest machine simply because it has the biggest numbers. Bigger is not automatically more practical.
Instead, I ask about truck size, site access, digging depth, daily working hours, material type, transportation restrictions and required attachments. Then we can compare the machine classes in a much more meaningful way.
For an overseas buyer, purchasing an excavator involves much more than the machine itself.
At Ganglong, we first discuss the project. We want to understand where the machine will work, what material it will handle, how many units are required and whether attachments or spare parts are needed.
After the configuration is confirmed, production time depends on the model, configuration, order quantity and any customization requirements. We confirm the expected delivery schedule before production so that the customer can arrange the next steps.
Before shipment, the machine is inspected according to the order requirements. We check appearance, main functions, hydraulic and electrical systems and basic operating performance. Standard documents and accessories are prepared according to the agreed order.
For payment, T/T is commonly arranged with a deposit before production and the balance before shipment. Specific payment terms are confirmed between both parties before the order is finalized.
Transportation normally depends on the destination and shipping route. Complete excavators can be shipped by sea, while suitable spare parts and accessories may be sent by air or express.
We also pay attention to packing. The machine is normally protected with film and fixed securely according to shipping requirements. Loose accessories and spare parts can be packed separately in suitable cartons or wooden cases.
For an international machinery order, small details can create big delays. A missing document, unclear packing list or poorly planned shipping arrangement can cause unnecessary trouble. That is why we treat the logistics side as part of the product supply process.
Ganglong Heavy Industry Technology (Hefei) Co., Ltd. was founded in 2013. Together with Hefei Ganglong International Trade Co., Ltd., we operate across construction machinery, mining machinery, agricultural machinery and related equipment.
Our group offers self-branded HKLOONG excavators, loaders, Backhoe loaders and swamp excavators. At the same time, we provide complete machine sales and leasing services involving domestic and international brands such as Hitachi, SANY, Lonking, Hyundai, XCMG, SHANMON and LOVOL.
For Sunward equipment, we work as a supplier and international trade partner. This means our value is not simply putting a product name on a quotation. We help customers handle the practical steps around the purchase.
Our international trade team has experience serving customers across Asia, Africa, America and other regions. Different markets have different shipping routes, documentation requirements and working conditions, so experience with the complete process matters.
We can also discuss matching attachments and other machines when a project requires more than one piece of equipment. A customer may need an excavator, breaker, bucket, spare parts or another type of construction machine at the same time. We can review those requirements together.
For us, a successful machinery order is not simply “machine delivered.” The machine needs to match the project, the documents need to be ready, the packing needs to be suitable and the shipping plan needs to make sense.
The published working weight is 39,200 kg, or approximately 39.2 tons. The final weight can vary depending on equipment and configuration, so we recommend confirming the current specification before ordering.
The published specification lists a Cummins QSL9 engine with 8.9 liters of displacement and rated power of 214 kW at 2,100 rpm.
The published standard bucket capacity is 2.0 m³. The final bucket configuration should be selected according to the material, digging conditions and required working method.
The published maximum digging depth is 6,855 mm. The maximum vertical wall digging depth is listed at 5,460 mm. Actual digging performance depends on ground conditions and the machine configuration.
The published maximum digging reach is 10,715 mm, while the maximum reach at ground level is 10,500 mm.
The machine can be considered for mining-related excavation and material handling when the configuration matches the working conditions. For hard rock, abrasive material or intensive breaker work, we recommend discussing the attachment and site conditions before confirming the order.
Attachment requirements depend on the machine configuration and application. Customers can discuss buckets, Hydraulic Breakers and other matching equipment with us before the final order is confirmed.
Complete machines are commonly transported by sea. The final method depends on destination, port, shipping route and project requirements. Suitable spare parts and accessories may be shipped by air or express.
There is no single delivery time for every SWE400E-3H order. Production time depends on the model, configuration, quantity and customization requirements. We confirm the expected production and delivery schedule before production.
T/T is commonly arranged with a deposit before production and the balance before shipment. The exact payment arrangement is confirmed between the buyer and seller according to the order.
We can discuss spare parts and related equipment requirements together with the machine order. Availability and delivery depend on the requested part, machine configuration and current supply situation.
I recommend starting with the job rather than the model name. Tell us the material you need to dig, required digging depth, expected working hours, site conditions, truck size, destination and any attachment requirements. From there, we can help you check whether the SWE400E-3H configuration fits the project.
After working with construction and industrial machinery buyers, I have learned that the right excavator is not always the largest one. It is the machine that matches the actual job.
The SWE400E-3H Large Excavator offers a 39.2-ton working weight, 2.0 m³ standard bucket, 214 kW Cummins QSL9 engine, 253 kN bucket digging force and a maximum published digging reach of 10,715 mm. These specifications place it in a useful range for customers handling substantial excavation and earthmoving work without moving into a much heavier machine class.
Its applications can include construction, road work, mining support, quarrying, industrial site preparation and general heavy earthmoving. But the final decision should always be based on the actual material, site and working method.
At Ganglong, we can help with more than the machine itself. We can discuss configuration, attachments, inspection, documents, packing, payment arrangements and international transportation. Through our international trade team, we support customers across different overseas markets and work to make the complete purchasing process clear.
If you are looking for a SWE400E-3H Excavator, send us your project information, destination, quantity and working requirements. We can check the applicable configuration and discuss a practical supply and delivery plan with you.
