HX220HD Crawler Excavator for Construction, Earthmoving and Heavy-Duty Excavation

When I talk with customers about a medium-size crawler excavator, I do not start with the biggest number on the specification sheet. I start with the job.

What are you digging? How hard is the ground? How deep is the excavation? Will the machine spend most of its time loading trucks, digging foundations, opening trenches, preparing roads, or moving soil around a large construction site?

Those questions are important because a crawler Excavator is a working tool, not simply a large diesel machine. The right combination of engine power, hydraulic performance, bucket size, machine weight and working range makes a real difference once the machine starts working eight hours a day.

The Hyundai HX220HD Crawler excavator is a medium excavator in the roughly 21-ton class. Hyundai's official product information lists an operating weight of 21.4 tons, rated power of 110 kW at 2,000 rpm, and a standard bucket capacity of 1.2 m³, with a listed bucket range of 0.87–1.20 m³. The same official specification lists a Hyundai 6BTAA-5.9 engine, two main pumps rated at 234 L/min each, a 350 kgf/cm² implement circuit, and a 340-liter fuel tank.

That gives the HX220HD a useful position for construction companies looking for a full-size medium crawler excavator without moving into a much heavier machine class.

At Ganglong Heavy Industry Technology (Hefei) Co., Ltd., we work with construction machinery from the buying side. We help customers confirm machine specifications, configurations, availability, inspection requirements, attachments, documents and international shipping arrangements.

So rather than simply repeating a catalog, I want to explain what the HX220HD means in real work, where I would use it, what its specifications tell me, and what I would check before arranging an international order.

1. What Is the Hyundai HX220HD Crawler Excavator?

The HX220HD Crawler Excavator is a tracked Hydraulic Excavator designed for construction, earthmoving, road work, foundation excavation, trenching, land preparation and material handling.

The machine uses crawler tracks instead of wheels. That design gives the excavator a stable working base and helps spread its weight over the ground.

For most construction customers, this is one of the first reasons to choose a crawler excavator. The machine is not primarily intended to travel long distances on public roads. Instead, it is designed to move around a construction site and spend most of its working time digging, lifting, swinging and loading.

The HX220HD is listed by Hyundai at 21.4 tons operating weight. Its standard bucket capacity is listed at 1.2 m³, with a 0.87–1.20 m³ bucket range depending on configuration.

That bucket size is useful for common earthmoving jobs. It gives the operator enough capacity to move a meaningful amount of material without putting the machine into the much larger heavy excavator category.

I like this kind of specification table because it tells me the basic shape of the machine.

It is not a Compact Excavator. It is not a giant Mining Excavator either.

It sits in a practical middle ground for contractors who need a serious machine for regular construction work.

2. How the HX220HD Excavator Works

The basic working principle of the HX220HD is easy to understand.

The diesel engine produces power. The hydraulic pumps use that power to move hydraulic oil through the machine. Hydraulic cylinders then turn that oil pressure into movement of the boom, arm and bucket. Hydraulic motors control functions such as swinging and crawler travel.

In simple words, the engine provides the energy and the hydraulic system turns that energy into useful movement.

A Normal Digging Cycle

Let us imagine the HX220HD working on a foundation excavation.

First, I position the machine on stable ground with enough space for the upper structure to swing.

The boom lowers the working equipment. The arm moves toward the excavation area, and the bucket teeth enter the soil.

As the bucket curls inward, it collects the material.

Then the boom lifts the loaded bucket. The upper structure swings toward the truck or stockpile, and the bucket opens to release the material.

The machine swings back and starts another cycle.

This happens again and again.

A Construction Excavator may perform hundreds or thousands of working movements during a normal shift. That is why smooth hydraulic control matters just as much as raw digging force.

Why Hydraulic Flow Matters

Hyundai lists two main hydraulic pumps on the HX220HD, each with a rated flow of 234 L/min.

Hydraulic flow affects how the machine's working functions receive oil during operation.

When the operator moves the boom, arm and bucket together, the hydraulic system has to manage several functions at the same time.

For example, when loading a truck, the operator may lift the boom while moving the arm and swinging the upper structure. The machine needs to respond in a controlled way rather than making each movement feel disconnected.

That is where a properly matched hydraulic system becomes important.

Stable Crawler Working Platform

The crawler undercarriage is another major part of the machine.

Tracks provide a broad contact area with the ground. The HX220HD specification also lists a maximum gradeability of 35 degrees and maximum traction force of 21,100 kgf.

These numbers tell me that Hyundai designed the machine for serious construction-site movement rather than light landscaping work.

Of course, maximum gradeability is a machine specification, not a recommendation to operate on any slope at that angle. Real jobsite conditions, soil, moisture, track condition and safety rules always come first.

3. Main HX220HD Features I Look At

21.4-Ton Operating Weight

The official HX220HD specification lists an operating weight of 21.4 tons.

At this size, the machine has enough mass to provide a stable platform during many normal excavation operations.

Operating weight also matters when planning transportation.

If a customer is importing an HX220HD, I need to know the actual configuration before planning shipping. Track width, attachments and optional equipment can affect the final weight and dimensions.

This is why I never recommend using a generic model number as the only shipping reference.

110 kW Engine Power

Hyundai lists the HX220HD with 110 kW rated power at 2,000 rpm.

Engine power provides the energy needed for excavation and hydraulic work.

But I would not compare Excavators using horsepower alone.

A machine's actual working ability depends on the complete system: engine, pumps, hydraulic pressure, bucket, boom, arm, machine weight and control system.

That is why I prefer to look at the full specification before recommending a machine to a customer.

1.2 m³ Bucket Capacity

The standard bucket capacity listed for the HX220HD is 1.2 m³, with Hyundai also publishing a 0.87–1.20 m³ bucket range.

For normal soil excavation and general earthmoving, this is a useful working size.

But bucket selection should follow the material.

Soft soil, clay, gravel and rock all behave differently. A bucket designed for general digging may not be the right tool for severe rock work.

If a customer tells me the machine will work in a quarry, I ask more questions before discussing the bucket. What material? How hard? How abrasive? What daily working hours? What attachment?

These details matter more than simply saying, “I need a 1.2 m³ bucket.”

Hyundai 6BTAA-5.9 Engine

The official HX220HD product information lists the Hyundai 6BTAA-5.9 engine, with maximum torque of 64 kgf·m at 1,300 rpm.

The engine works together with the hydraulic system to provide the power needed for excavation.

For customers buying internationally, I also pay attention to the destination market and parts situation. Engine support can vary from country to country, so I recommend checking local service and spare-part availability before confirming a long-term fleet purchase.

12.2 rpm Swing Speed

Hyundai lists a swing speed of 12.2 rpm for the HX220HD.

Swing speed matters because the excavator often needs to move between the digging point and the dumping point.

In a typical loading cycle, the machine digs, lifts, swings, dumps and swings back.

Good cycle efficiency is not about making every movement as fast as possible. It is about keeping the whole cycle smooth and controlled.

340-Liter Fuel Tank

The official specification lists a 340-liter fuel tank.

A larger fuel tank can be useful on jobs where the excavator works for long periods away from a convenient refueling point.

Actual fuel consumption depends on workload, operator habits, material, idle time, attachment and working conditions, so I would not promise a fixed number of operating hours from tank capacity alone.

4. HX220HD Technical Data and Comparison

When a customer asks me whether the HX220HD is suitable for a project, I normally put the key specifications together first.

This comparison is useful because model names can be confusing.

The HX220HD, HX220HD+ and HX220S may look almost identical when you see them in a search result, but their published specifications are not exactly the same.

For example, Hyundai lists the HX220HD with a 1.2 m³ bucket, while the HX220HD+ and HX220S pages
